The antecedents of the Bauhaus go back to century XIX. They begin with the devastating consequences that increasing industrialization, first in England and later also in Germany, had in the conditions of life and the production of the craftsmen and the working class. The technological progress brought with himself a change in the social structures; ample sectors of the population were proletarizaron. But, this way, the production of goods could be rationalized and be lowered the price of. England was raised in century XIX like the more prominent industrial power of Europe. In the great universal exhibitions, that from 1851 exhibited the technical and cultural advances of the nations, the English were at the top until good entered the ninety, being the unquestionable winners. The English writer John Ruskin was one of first in critically observing the situation, that he tried to improve by means of social reforms and resigning to the work with machine. Its ideal one was the work to the medieval way, as it had described in his book The Stones of Venice (1851-1853). His more important follower, admirer and later also friend, was the polifacético William Morris whose mission was successfully to translate the ideas of Ruskin in facts. With Ruskin he already had in common "hatred to the modern civilization" his products; for that reason, each chair, each table and each bed, each spoon, each jar and each glass had again to be invented. Morris founded so influential factories of work, that it would be possible to be spoken of an own style from the last third of the century, the Arts call and Crafts Stil, inspired by gothic and Eastern models. At the same time, the English had reformed, already from the educative Fifties, processes for craftsmen and the Academies. The students had to design by themselves instead of copying given models.
